Tonari Gumi, an incorporated, not-for-profit, charitable society was established in 1974 and is one of the longest serving Japanese Canadian volunteer association in Canada dedicated to enriching the lives of the pioneers, the issei. Clients who might not otherwise have access to services due to language barriers can receive counselling and assistance in times of need. The drop-in centre allows Japanese and English speaking people to enjoy traditional recreational activities, socializing, and receive vital information on health, housing and employment. Tonari Gumi has brought various generations together and has fostered community projects such the Powell Street Festival and historic exhibit and the book, A Dream of Riches. Instrumental for the success of the organization is the former Executive Director, , a post-war immigrant.
