Takeo Yamashiro

Takeo Yamashiro was born in Hiroshima, Japan and was the first professional musician with traditional musical training to enter Canada from Japan. Reluctant to conform to a rigid lifestyle required in a master-student relationship to play shakuhachi professionally, he came in 1972. When he arrived he had nothing except his instrument. As one of the original members of the group that formed Tonari Gumi, he became Coordinator/Executive Director, a senior’s drop-in centre that allowed Takeo to pursue his interest in music. For the last 42 years, he has studied, taught and performed the shakuhachi in Japan, Canada, United States and Europe. He served as a judge for the 1994 and 1995 Canadian Juno Awards. He has performed on two solo albums and more than ten film scores that include six National Film Board productions such as “Obaachan’s Garden”.
