Takeo Tanabe

Takao Tanabe, a nisei, is a landscape artist of international reputation and an influential teacher of younger generations of Canadian artists. The son of a commercial fisherman, Tak was born in Prince Rupert in 1926. In 1942, he was interned in British Columbia’s interior and in 1944 moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba. He attended the Winnipeg School of Art followed by painting and studies in New York, England, Italy, Denmark and Japan. Tak was head of the art department at the Banff School of Art and served on juries and committees at the National Capital Commission and Canada Council. He has received numerous recognitions, including the Order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia.

Tanabe’s blockprint, Spanish Banks, was a fund raising project for the NAJC to support Redress for Japanese Canadians.
