Constance L. Sugiyama

Connie Sugiyama, a sansei, is a senior partner of Gowling Lafleur Henderson LLP, one of Canada's largest law firms. In the early stage of the Japanese Canadian redress campaign, Connie was a founding member of Sodan Kai that initiated open community discussions on the various redress options. She has served as director of the Japanese Canadian Redress Foundation (JCRF) and the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (JCCC). Connie was the first chair of the JCCC's successful "Building Together" capital campaign that has now raised more than $10 million for the new centre in Toronto. Despite her busy law career, Connie continues to be actively involved as special advisor to the JCCC and the JCRF and as a director of the Japan Society. She is currently chairing the JCCC's Japanese Canadian Legacy Project that is creating a digital archive of Japanese Canadian oral histories and related material. Connie also serves on the board of trustees of the Hospital for Sick Children, an internationally renowned Canadian pediatric hospital and research institution.
