Each year on the first weekend of August, festival goers head down to Powell Street and Oppenheimer Park in the heart of what was, before World War II, Vancouver’s thriving Japanese Canadian community. This festival began in 1976 and continues today to be a unique festival in Canada, celebrating Japanese Canadian heritage and culture. Visitors to the two-day event will encounter the smell of Japanese cooking, shoppers browsing around the craft booths, demonstrations, sumo wrestling and the sounds and sights of traditional and contemporary performances on the main stage and at Firehall Arts Centre.
