Dawn Obokata
Dawn Obokata has been acting professionally since 1980. A graduate of the University of Toronto, she joined the ensemble of Actor’s Lab Theatre in 1980, and became Associate Artistic Director in 1983. With the company she has performed in many original plays, most notably her solo pieces Faces of the Moon, and Soulscape: Wilderness Triology, and toured Vancouver, Montreal, Quebec, New York, Germany and Poland.
In 1992, Dawn created the title role in Paula Wing’s adaptation of Joy Kogawa’s novel Naomi’s Road and toured schools in the roles of “Mama” and “Obasan”. She also helped bring Japanese folktales to schools and community groups. She continues her exploration of movement and image-based theatre in Toronto where she lives. Each summer she and her husband conduct theatre apprentice and wilderness programs in northern Ontario.
