Glen Michibata
Glen Michibata, a sansei, learned to play tennis at a very young age of six in Ontario. He won his first junior provincial tournament in the under 10 category, the under 18 champion at the Canadian Nationals in Ottawa and participated in junior tournaments at the major European Opens and the U.S. Open. He was the Senior Men’s Champion twice. While attending university in the United States on a tennis scholarship, he participated in the National Collegiate championships and named “All-American”. He turned professional in 1983, and played in grand slam events at Wimbleton, England, French Open, Australian Open and the U.S. Open and was member of the Canadian Davis Cup team. Glen Michbata was inducted into the Canadian Tennis Hall of Fame and the Etobicoke Sports Hall of Fame. He is the first and only Japanese Canadian to play professional tennis. He retired in 1993.
