Kimiko (Muraoka) Koyanagi

Kimiko Koyanagi is a third generation dollmaker born into Tokyo’s Muraoka dollmaking family. She is married to Canadian ‘Nisei’, architect, Jim Koyanagi, and has been a resident of Burlington since 1966. In creating the unusual sculptural forms, Kimiko utilizes a traditional doll making technique and materials to create unusual sculptural forms. The doll-like sculptures are tall, slender and effeminate with thin, gentle curves. The materials used include Paulownia wood shaving and a mixture of paste and rice paper. Surface finishing includes an application of white pigment ground from seashells. Decorative floral patterns are added to individual pieces as a final touch. In her artwork, the artist expresses her inner thoughts and spiritual feelings.

Annually, Kimiko successfully exhibits at Burlington Arts Centre Auction and Dundas Valley School of Art Auction.
