West Coast Communities Exhibit at the Museum of Civilization in Ottawa
The Japanese Canadian community assisted the Museum of Civilization in raising funds for the shipping and installation of a gill-netter boat for the West Coast Communities module that highlights the Japanese Canadian fishing community of Steveston. The Nishga Girl, a gill-netter fishing boat permanently on display at Canada Hall, is the centerpiece of the exhibit and was designed and built by Japanese Canadian shipwright in 1967 in Port Edward, British Columbia. This fishing boat is typical of the ones used by Japanese Canadian fishers before the war.
