On August 10, 1991, the so-called “Japanese section” of the Chemainus Cemetery was rededicated with newly erected Japanese Canadian Memorial Monument. The unveiling ceremony was officiated jointly by representatives from the Buddhist Churches of Canada and from St. Michael and All Angels Anglican Church in Chemainus. During the forced removal in World War II, the JC section of the cemetery was desecrated. Six JC headstones were discovered in the nearby dirt pile and were incorporated into the monument along with the names of the 29 deceased Japanese Canadians buried in the cemetery. The desecration of head stones and graves was common in communities where the Japanese had lived before the war.
