Takeo Yamashiro

Born in Hiroshima, Japan, Takeo Yamashiro came to Canada in 1972 as the first post war musician from Japan with a traditional musical background in shakuhachi. Takeo was one of the five original members when Jun Hamada began the community based issei support project called Japanese Community Volunteers in 1974. The Japanese name “Tonari Gumi” was adopted soon after. Takeo had been the Coordinator/Executive Director for over 30 years until his retirement in 2004. Tonari Gumi helped the Vancouver Japanese Canadian community in its process of rebirth and growth in time for the redress movement. Takeo was responsible for maintaining peace and harmony during these sensitive periods. In 2003, he received the Minister of Foreign Affairs’ Award for his invaluable contributions to the community.
