Renewal - Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF)
Under the terms of the redress agreement, the federal government agreed to create the Canadian Race Relations Foundation, which would “foster racial harmony and cross-cultural understanding and help eliminate racism.”
Although the Conservative government passed Bill C-63 to establish the CRRF in 1990, the bill was not proclaimed. On October 28, 1996 the Liberal government proclaimed the CRRF Act into law and officially opened its doors in November 1997.
The CRRF received a one-time endowment of $24 million from the Government of Canada, $12 million provided on behalf of Japanese Canadians in commemoration of the injustices suffered during and after World War II. The foundation operates on the income derived from the interest.
