Renewal - Trip to Japan

In August 1989, representatives from the Secretariat and the NAJC visited Japan to encourage any potential claimants who had ties to Canada during the 1941-1949 period to apply for individual redress. During the 16-day visit to nine cities, a joint delegation met with Japanese Canadians who were deported to Japan after the war. The Canadian delegation, led by Anne Scotten, executive director, and Art Miki, NAJC president, met with Japanese Canadians living in Japan to explain the details of the redress agreement, eligibility criteria and application procedure, and to assist claimants with the application form.

In the nine meetings, 700 people attended. At each meeting, Anne Scotten opened with the Prime Minister’s acknowledgement and explanation of the spirit and content of the redress agreement. Art Miki provided an overview of the struggle for redress, the role of the NAJC in achieving redress and the implementation process.
