Renewal - Japanese Canadian Redress Foundation (JCRF)

Under the terms of the Redress agreement, the NAJC received a $12 million community fund to assist with the revitalization and rejuvenation of the Japanese Canadian community devastated by the Canadian Government’s wartime actions.
The NAJC was given the responsibility by the government to establish an organizational structure that would be accountable for administering the community fund. As a result, the NAJC approved the formation of the Japanese Canadian Redress Foundation, which was incorporated and registered with the federal department of Consumer and Corporate Affairs in 1989.
The purpose of the Foundation is to support projects that “preserve our history, rebuild and develop our community on a local, regional and national basis, and heal, unite and assist in establishing the future direction of community development”.
The Board of Directors of the JCRF consisted of three representatives from the NAJC, five people elected from the designated regions and up to three appointed persons. was the chairperson and Tony Tamayose, the executive director of JCRF.
The Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the NAJC, the Foundation and the Government of Canada defined the following uses for the $12 million fund:
• No less than $8 million for capital projects such as health care, seniors’ housing, drop-in centres, cultural centres, and other such projects.
• No more than $4 million for educational, social and cultural activities or programs that contribute to the well-being of the community or that promote human rights.
• A maximum of $500,000 to the NAJC for community outreach.
The Foundation provided financial support to 160 projects. JCRF closed its doors on March 31, 2002
