Renewal - Nikkei Voice
In 1985, the NAJC established a national newspaper that was distributed to approximately 16,000 Japanese Canadian households to inform the community on the progress of the redress campaign. However, the NAJC recognized the need for a national newspaper that would be a forum for Japanese Canadians. A non-profit organization responsible for the paper was established in Toronto. The first Issue of Nikkei Voice was published in December 1987. The bi-monthly paper was distributed to all Japanese Canadian homes and communicated political and social news. Following the redress settlement, Nikkei Voicewas published monthly.
Eventually, the cost of a mass distribution of the newsletter became prohibitive and subscription fees were adopted. Today, Nikkei Voice is the only English and Japanese language newspaper that focuses primarily on Japanese Canadian issues and is truly a voice for Japanese Canadians.
