Renewal - Rev. David Nobu-tsune Murata

Rev. David Nobu-tsune (Ryuzoji) Murata David Murata was born in Japan in 1957, the son of Rev. Benjamin Toyo-tsune Murata, who was a missionary from Japan to Canada among the Japanese United Churches in Vancouver, Alberta and Toronto, and then was called to the Chancellor of the Fukuoka Jo Gakuin. David came to Canada at the age of 12. After graduating from the University of Toronto and University of Western Ontario, he was a lecturer at U of T. In 1984, he was appointed to a three-year term as the Japanese language minister of the United Church in Vancouver. In 1985, he organized the first tour of internment sites in the interior BC with Terry Watada and Cho Kuroyanagi. In 1986, he became the 10th Anniversary Coordinator of the Powell Street Festival. In 1987, he became actively involved in the redress movement when he was appointed National Redress Coordinator and was responsible for the Ottawa Rally. He skillfully organized and coordinated the many activities that led to a successful rally on Parliament Hill. Most recently, he received a full scholarship to the Summer Leadership Institute of Harvard University. Today, David serves as an ordained minister at Knox United Church and the executive officer of the Knox Inter-faith Community Economic Development Society in Winnipeg, as well as, Vice President of MJCCA and 2005 Japanese Pavilion Coordinator.
