Renewal - Equality Now! Report
In March 1984, the Special Committee on Visible Minorities in Canadian
Society, an all-party committee commissioned by the House of Commons,
released its report Equality Now!. The arguments presented in the
report were justification that “the wrong done to Japanese Canadians must
be rectified”. For Japanese Canadians, the report’s recommendations for
redress and call for review of the War Measures Act was heartening and was
further ammunition for the NAJC to seek redress. The report also raised public
awareness of the redress issue. In response to the recommendations, Prime Minister
Trudeau dismissed redress for Japanese Canadians. The Minister of State for
Multiculturalism, Hon. David Collenette stated that the government would not
issue an official “acknowledgement” but would express “regret” along with a token
$5 million foundation to combat racism.
