Renewal - Ann Sunahara

Born in Toronto, Ann Sunahara graduated from the University of Toronto in 1969 and went to Malaysia as a volunteer teacher. There she met her husband, David Sunahara. Following their marriage, Ann entered graduate studies in history determined to find out why David and his family were interned during the Second World War. The resulting book, The Politics of Racism: The Uprooting of Japanese Canadians during the Second World War, published in 1981, was the first book to use the government’s own documents to show how officials abused the human and civil rights of Japanese Canadians. As a lawyer, Ann assisted the NAJC in reviewing and proposing amendments to the new Emergencies Act. The Parliamentary Committee adopted many of the recommendations. In 1989, the NAJC appointed Ann to the Redress Advisory Committee to deal with claims for individual redress. She later resigned to take a position with Justice Canada.
