Toyo Takata (1920 - 2002)
A nisei, Toyo Takata was born in Victoria, B.C. where he spent his early years until the war began. After two years in internment centers, he relocated to Toronto. From 1948 to 1952, he was the English editor of the New Canadian, the twice-weekly newspaper for Japanese Canadians. He was active in the Japanese Canadian community and served as president of the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. Toyo is credited for originating the Japanese Canadian Centennial in 1977. A historian and author, he wrote Nikkei Legacy, the story of Japanese Canadians in 1983.
