Historical Murals in Chemainus, British Columbia

In August 1991, two murals painted by Japanese Canadian artists were unveiled. The first mural unveiled was “Lone Scout” by Stanley Taniwa of Manitoba. It is a portrayal of the first Japanese Canadian Lone Scout of America in full uniform, ex Chemainus nisei Shige Yoshida. Mr. Yoshida attended the ceremony. The second mural, “Winning Float”, by Joyce Kamikura of Richmond represents a picture of pre-war nikkei Chemainus showing five local Japanese girls who rode the float in a parade.
