1987 Robert Yasuhara Kadoguchi, C.M.

North York, Ontario

He has made a great contribution towards the mutual understanding between the people of Japan and Canada through his efforts within a number of multicultural organizations and as Founding President of the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre, which not only caters to the needs of the Japanese community in Toronto, but also actively supports the activities of many other ethnic groups.

1990 Roger Obata S., C.M.

Toronto, Ontario

A towering and respected leader of Japanese Canadians, he devoted more than 40 years of his life to rebuilding the remnants of a community which had been scattered across Canada and was a signatory to the historic agreement which finally awarded compensation to the community for evacuation losses suffered during the Second Great War. He is a human rights activist and an example for all Canadians who love justice and freedom.

1991 Arthur K. Miki, C.M.

Winnipeg, Manitoba

A Winnipeg school teacher by profession, he has been involved in many educational initiatives and also played an active role in multicultural organizations at the local, provincial and national levels. As the President of the National Association of Japanese Canadians, he was a respected spokesman during the negotiations for redress for Japanese Canadians.

1993 Irene Ayako Uchida, O.C.

Burlington, Ontario

Professor emeritus of paediatrics and pathology at McMaster University, where she directed a model laboratory for more than twenty years, she has helped set high standards for cytogenetic laboratory diagnostic services in Canada. Her research on radiation and human chromosome abnormalities has made notable contribution to medical science.

1999 John Kimura Parker, O.C.

Vancouver, British Columbia

A gifted pianist, he has played in some of the world’s most prestigious venues. In addition, he has given unique, personal concerts in remote communities across Canada. One of the founders of Piano Six, he offers a taste of classical music to residents and students in regions where this genre is rarely performed. His recitals, classes and musical presentations have opened the mind and delighted the ear of a wide variety of audiences around the world.
