WWII Experience - Tsukiye Muriel Kitagawa (1912 – 1974)

Muriel Kitagawa was a prolific writer contributing many articles to the New Canadian on a variety of topical subjects – arranged marriages as an example. Readers knew her as a colourful and provocative writer. She wasn’t afraid to challenge the views of racist individuals, politicians or groups and she defend her community’s commitment to her native land, Canada. In June 1942 the Kitagawa family received special permission to move to Toronto, Ontario. With a family of four young children, her twins born right in the midst of the uprooting of her community, it is a wonder that Muriel found time to write as much as she did. Her letters and writings have been published in This is My Own edited by Roy Miki.
