WWII Experience - Dispersal
The dispersal policy forced Japanese Canadians out of B.C. permanently. The government justified their action by stating that it was in the best interest for Japanese Canadians “to distribute their numbers as widely as possible throughout the country where they will not create feelings of racial hostility” suggesting that Japanese Canadians were responsible for creating racism. This policy of cultural genocide resulted in the loss of language, identity and sense of community and has had a lasting effect on Japanese Canadians.
