Canadian Aid Urged For Earthquake and Tsunami Victims in Japan

(TORONTO) Various media outlets are reporting at least 300 deaths and catastrophic damage in the aftermath of the magnitude-8.9 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The earthquake struck at 2:46 p.m. local time on Friday afternoon, at a depth of 10 kilometres about 125 kilometres off the eastern coast, and was followed by at least 19 powerful aftershocks.

“We offer our heart-felt condolences to the victims of this natural disaster and to their families and a speedy recovery for the injured,” Colleen Hua, CCNC National President said today. “CCNC urges the Canadian Government to pledge generous humanitarian aid and to immediately offer technical support to the rescue effort.”

“Canada has technical expertise specifically in the area of search and rescue – we can make a difference in saving lives if we act quickly.”

CCNC also urges the Canadian Government to match donations and contributions from individuals and Canadian corporations. In 2008, CCNC worked collaboratively with numerous charities, local organizations and government agencies in response to the Sichuan earthquake.

Founded in 1980, CCNC is a national non-profit organization with 27 chapters across Canada and a community leader for Chinese Canadians in promoting a more just, respectful, and inclusive society. CCNC and allies are one of the co-recipients of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation’s 2008 Award of Excellence for its work on the Chinese Head Tax redress campaign.
